Item Description
1857 20 reales
Spain
Queen Isabel II
Madrid Mint
(six pointed stars)
AU
(scratch on obverse 10h to 2h)
As the highest silver denomination of Spain and possessing more silver content than most similarly sized coins of Europe at the time, 20 reales coins were heavily exported for melting or bullion trade throughout Isabel's reign. Many of those that survived melting are heavily circulated, cleaned, or damaged. Finding an eye appealing example, impaired or otherwise, is challenging in any grade. Attractive AU examples are rarely encountered.
"
As discussed in the historical chapters of this book, the larger silver coins were a prime target of silver export. Many were melted and those that survived were heavily used. Sales records indicate that collectors consider coins of this type with evidence of cleaning to be market acceptable. The price guide above considers cleaned coins in VF or better condition that have nice eye appeal as market acceptable.
"
- excerpt from the book: The Coins of Queen Isabel II of Spain
The 20 reales of this type were issued from 1856 to 1864 at the Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona mints. The beautiful design was created and engraved by Luis Marchionni as indicated by the L.M. at the truncation of the neck.
“
As had occurred with the 1st Decimal coinage a design change was undertaken for issuance of the 2nd Decimal coinage. Luis Marchionni began working as a Royal engraver in 1841 before becoming Chief Engraver of the Mint in 1854. In this position he designed the Laureate Head and Draped Bust coins which bear the initials L.M. at the base of the bust. In fact, he was specifically granted authority to place his initials on the coinage by the Minister of Finance.
