SPAIN 2 ESCUDOS 1622 "YEAR OF THE ATOCHA, DATED!" NGC 61HIGHLY DESIRABLE DATED GOLD TREASURE COIN
SPAIN YEAR OF THE ATOCHA, DATED '1622' 2 ESCUDOS NGC 61 GOLD TREASURE DOUBLOON SHIPWRECK COIN, DATE FRONT AND CENTER AT 12 O'CLOCK I was really astounded when I first saw this Gold Cob (struck in Madrid), to find a Gold Cob with the Atocha Date of 1622 struck on the coin was impressive enough, but then to have it come back from grading in Mint State NGC 61, well…. I was beyond pleased! The Obverse is just as impressive, displaying boldly a FULL CROWN and Shield!!! Even the King’s Ordinal (Philipus IIII) is prominent in the legends. As many of you know, 99.++% of the time everything Cob is struck in Seville, so to find this RARE Madrid piece is tough enough to see the “Atocha Date of 1622” is quite something. Not to mention the FULL (nearly perfectly centered) Bold CROSS and Tressure, all on a very large Planchet (approx. 25mm and over Full weight of 6.77gm). Although there’s really no way to know if this exact piece was on the Atocha 1622 Shipwreck (as there were many from Spain, pocket pieces-wealthy passengers/ merchants), it certainly has Sediment and toning of an underwater piece and has the romantic appearance of a piece of Shipwreck Treasure!xx
