Description
Malcolm Brown ( 1931-2020) was an important artist who played a critical role in promoting Black art, particularly in the Midwest. A longtime art teacher at Cleveland’s Shaker Heights High School, Brown and his wife, Ernestine, also created and ran Cleveland’s Malcolm Brown Art Gallery, which was pretty much the only Midwestern art space dedicated to presenting and furthering Black art. I have included a link for those who would like to know more about this impressive artist. *The piece I have, which is a mechanically reproduced print , is an 8 x 10” ( frame dimensions, actual image is 4 1/2 x 6 7/8”) portrait of a young girl with a pink ribbon in her long, dark curls. The loose, gestural quality of the ribbon and the hair are echoed in the girl’s clothing, which trails off into complete abstraction at the bottom of the image. ( Much of Brown’s work has this appealing, jazzy feel).
The metal frame and the matte are both gold, and the back is stamped “ American Art Company” of Charleston , South Carolina. The frame is stable and there is a solid hanging wire in place. The piece is in EUC with no cracks , chips, staining, fading or water damage. It is display- ready and will
add character and grace to your collection and/or decor. Ships UPS Ground from Los Angeles.
