India Hanging Gong 7.5" Wood Frame 18 X 15" Elephant + Chickens Photos + Descr.
In many Asian families the Gong was, and still is, an attribute of wealth and served as a status symbol. In rites the Gong was used in the evocation of ghosts and in the beginning of demons. Touching a Gong brought you fortune and strength. In the rituals of the Far East the Gong has retained its special significance to this day.
The elephant vahana represents wisdom, divine knowledge and royal power; it is associated with Lakshmi, Brihaspati, Shachi and Indra. Indra was said to ride on a flying white elephant named Airavata, who was made the King of all elephants by Lord Indra
Hens have been a symbol of prosperity in India for centuries, given as gifts to celebrate life's milestones
This is a mid-brown wood (could be a mid-grade of ebony) stained black to appear like a fine grade of ebony.  This one is made for the tourist market and was never used as a family or religious artifact.
