    Description

Bronze Painted Hano Clown or Koshare "Watermelon Man" Signed By Artist Marco Oviedo. Condition is "Used". Great estate sale find, amazing piece! It's quite heavy, weighs in at 3.3 pounds and measures approximately 10" tall x 4.75" wide x 4.25" deep. He has a few scratches on his back right heel. He also has threaded hole on the bottom, he was originally mounted to a stone stand/pedestal. The stand/pedestal is missing and is not included. He works great as a shelf sitter though! This piece is a rare limited edition, marked 56 of 75. He is definitely a conversations starter!
    About the artist:
Marco A. Oviedo is a visionary woodcarver/sculptor who lives and works in Chimayo, New Mexico. The piñon-juniper dotted foothills of historic Chimayo provide a backdrop for the traditional folk art and unique contemporary bronze sculpture that Marco produces. Since the early seventies he has interpreted New Mexico religious folk art styles and southwest designs in his creations. Marco makes traditional wooden saints, but he goes beyond the boundaries of traditition by creating santos in bronze. Marco begins by carving a wooden statue. Then, by following the lost wax technique, he replicates the carving in bronze. A final patina is produced with special salts to simulate a color that is produced by the natural pigments used in traditional santos. Collections of his work can be found at the Albuquerque Museum, Museum of New Mexico-Santa Fe, International Folk Art Museum-Santa Fe, Millicent Rogers Museum-Taos, Smithsonian Air and Space Museum-Washington, D.C., National Hispanic Heritage Museum-Albuquerque, Spanish Colonial Arts Museum-Santa Fe, and the Autry Museum-Los Angeles.

    Marco's inspiration:
"Traditionally, Hano clowns are the ones who set the stage before a ceremonial dance. The clown is typically painted white with black stripes and symbolizes the happy-sad or good-evil situations in life. I have depicted this Hano as very happy, offering to share a slice of watermelon. The bronze has a titanium oxide patina, with painted black stripes."
