Nuestra Senora de Atocha landed on a coral reef in September, 1622 during a severe hurricane near the Marquesas Islands just off of Key West. The treasure ship sank with her hull ripped open from the coral. Except for five, everyone on board drowned. The Atocha was bound for Spain with priceless treasures and hundreds of millions worth of gold bars, silver bars, chains, emeralds, coins, gems and jewelry. The wreck was finally discovered by Mel Fisher in 1985.
