King Philip IV, The Planet King, was born in 1605 and inherited a huge empire from his father Philip III, when he died in 1621.
Philip IV had married 13 year old Elisabeth of France at age 10, and she had borne him 10 children, only 1 of which was a male heir.
That male heir died in 1646.
His remarriage to Mariana of Austria provided his heir Charles II.
Philip IV was known as a patron of the arts, a supporter of a strong navy, a good father, and a man rumored to have had numerous affairs.
His life was one of political intrigues and military actions.
The 30 Years War was quite costly to Spain.
Philip tried to control currency but inflation soared.
By 1640 he was faced with a political and fiscal crisis.
His first revaluation of coinage took place in 1641, when money passing through the mint was restamped with greater value than when received.
More revaluations occurred in later years.
By the time Philip passed away, the Spanish empire had grown to 4.7 million square miles, largely the result of numerous colonies, but Spain was considered weakened internally.
The throne was passed to 4 year old Charles II, assisted by his mother Mariana and a junta committee.
You get in this lot one 1600s shipwreck coin and a copy of the COA shown.
